I did an upgrade on a server running Ubuntu server Hardy (08.04 LTS, I believe) to Lucid (10.04 LTS) today and got the above error message in the logs for all in bound messages and when attempting to send messages.
I did some searching and found the following thread: https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=C232BA212CCA4AC394A94646F7F8141E%40martinmobil&forum_name=courier-users (hopefully that comes through correctly) Sam's response about the package being out of whack sent me searching Ubuntu areas, and I found this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/courier-authlib/+bug/483170 Apparently, they changed file permissions and/or ownership w/o changing the startup script (or the other way around). There are two options for work arounds in that thread: changing the owner of the directory, or changing the perrmissions. I chose to change the ownership, and I was back in business. This has been happening since Ubuntu 09.10. I don't know if it's fixed in 10.10, but based on the fact that the bug is unresolved, I would have to say no. I just wanted to post this so that other people with the same problem would have some information on how to fix it.
