you should file a bug against gentoo courier package. While I can not 
tell whether the problem is in courier's configure scripts, it didn't 
appear on gentoo just about a month or two ago...

as I have said I'll try to dig about it more but not now - i just have 
some work mode.

If you (and hiopefully Sam) could help here a bit...
