You're right, and I'm an idiot: comparing the sequence of archived messages with the log of incoming SMTP connections from that list made it obvious that the line I quoted was related to the next message from the list --which I had received and read, but not paired with its log entry. Anyway, thank you so much, Sam and Gordon, for helping me out of that grief. Thus, it was a remote Mailman's hiccup (I have no entry for that network on that day's "Errs/net" log page.)
