Thanks for the references.  Yes, it is indeed puzzling.  Here is a snippet of 
the DSNs I get:

                            UNDELIVERABLE MAIL

Telus now runs "InterMail vM.8.01.03.00 201-2260-125-20100507".

Before I started getting those Invalid 7bit DATA messages, they were running 
"InterMail vM.7.08.02.00 201-2186-121-20061213" and "InterMail vM.7.09.01.00 
201-2219-108-20080618".  Some something happened between vM.7.x and vM.8.x .
