Actually, I just noticed that Fedora (and by extension Red Hat) has the
stated intention of consolidating on NSS for SSL:

This is definitely a thought: replacing OpenSSL with NSS, but keeping GnuTLS. OpenSSL is, as I said, very difficult to work with. I wouldn't object to letting it go.
