After playing around with the package, it seems that without the libtool archive files (*.la) the testsuite fails when trying to rpmbuild courier-imap. It complains about not being able to find libcourierauth.so Since Fedora packaging guidelines require .la files to be removed, I've gone with the ld.so.conf.d entry for now. When I move on to packaging courier-imap for Fedora, I'll take a closer look at why the testsuite is failing, as courierauthconfig --ldflags provides the correct additional link directory. The reviewer of the package for Fedora also wondered if we really needed to be installing the sysvinit script when we're using a system unit file. Since the init script is so simple, I've created a patch against the unit file to move all the functionality of the init script to the unit file. I think this may be a worthwhile change to add upstream, unless it is likely the init script will change again.
