Either a stalled reverse DNS lookup, or a stalled IDENT query, if enabled.

Why not. It's certainly quite plausible – someone trying a dictionary attack on either port 587 or port 25.
I guess my question is if port 25 is getting hammered will that also delay port 587's ability to handle incoming auth'd requests?
