Symlinking should work.

Nope. An IMAP server has no knowledge of the brand of the IMAP client. It's just an anonymous socket connection from some IP address.

I do recall some dusty, forgotten IMAP extension where the client and the server exchange their software versions. That's it. It serves no other purpose, whatsoever, and, like every other IMAP extension, it is optional and the client and the server must be coded to use it.
