Yes, I agree that normally Gentoo has quite new packages, but some
packages - like courier - lag somewhat behind.
E.g. these are the "stable" version in portage at the moment:
mail-mta/courier                0.75.0  (current is 0.76.3)
net-libs/courier-authlib        0.66.4  (@ current)
net-libs/courier-unicode        1.3     (current is 1.4)
net-mail/courier-imap           4.16.2  (current is 4.17.2)
