Hello all I've been a lurker on this list for about a year now. I have been working out of the house, in a friend's office, at a pay-as-you-go library (new trend in major Japanese cities; geared toward students and lunch hour study buffs) and everywhere in between but today I start coworking, albeit at a very primal level.
I will be working with the folks of OfficeShare in Fukuoka Japan.( http://www.office-share.jp/) A small, organic group of web designers and freelancers with skills and schedules that are across the map. Many of them have day jobs and use the space at night. Still waiting to see who turns up when I do (essentially 9 to 5). The space is an ancient 1 room apartment. It looks pretty run down from the outside, but the actual space has been remodeled. Its spartan but will do the trick! There are 7 desks and a small kitchen. The rules are simple: pay on time, don't break other people's stuff and help out each other where you can. 2 of the members started this as a hobby on the side about 3 years ago. It's not a full fledged coworking space with a whole menu of options but I hope to work with my new found colleagues to conceptualize the idea into something more appealing to the Japanese market and maybe even get a bigger, more official space off the ground in the near future. I will talk to the guys about maybe putting a little blurb on the Coworking wiki, and I have been spreading the word thru my network of expat contacts as well. I'll keep following the threads here to get some ideas for what we can do over here in Fukuoka. If anyone of you happens to be travelling through this part of Japan, drop me a line: lunch is one me !
