As the aforementioned journalist at Office Nomads, I can tell you that one of the biggest reasons that journalists likely don't populate coworking spaces more is that people tend not to value our work anymore. I don't want to turn this into a scree about how you all should subscribe to your local paper (I don't even do that), but when most major daily print outlets are laying people off left and right and the blogs and online outlets don't/can't/won't pay writers because the exposure they give us should be enough (this is HuffPo's argument) or they simply can't, how are we supposed to pay the fees associated with doing business?
So I am one of the lucky ones in that I AM paid to do my job and Office Nomads and I have a work-trade agreement, but most of us are so busy trying to figure out how to get a paycheck (not to mention actually getting work which is an entirely different job) so we can't afford to pay for office space. If you care about quality journalism and want to support it as a coworking space as the sector figures out what's next, maybe your coworking spaces can offer grants or scholarships to journalists? Doing that especially for ones that are starting up new sites that aim to actually pay writers would be an especially big mitzvah. c Charles Redell Associate Editor Sustainable Industries <http://www.sustainableindustries.com> 206-552-8042 (NOTE NEW PHONE NUMBER) [email protected] Download our Top 10 Green Building Products Awards<http://www.sustainableindustries.com/resources>free!
