Hello coworking world! Inspired by all of your efforts, I've been working with a couple of my fellow grad students on a project that addresses the "problems of coworking facilities". Since a coworking facility is not a traditional office environment, strategies to solve it's problems are often unique to coworking. We've generated a short list of problems and have spoken with some local coworking facilities on their unique strategies to tackle them. However, the little information that we have acquired is far from extensive. We would be grateful to those of you who would be willing to share some of your own personal experiences with these problems by listing the strategies you have chosen to address them. I'm only listing a couple of problems, but feel free to add any that aren't on the list.
Some examples of problems: 1. Dealing with auditory distractions (noise control): A coworking facility promotes open collaboration. This generally means that the space is mostly devoid of private spaces (such as cubicles). There must be some balance between total openness and auditory privacy so that an individual coworker is not constantly distracted by the noise of others. potential strategy: Quiet spaces might be available for those times when coworkers don't want to be distracted. Do any of you have strategies of your own? 2. Personal property: Coworking facilities are generally shared spaces. Some coworkers would like to leave a few of their belongings at the facility when they leave for home. Items, such as books, could be shared with other coworkers. Yet, they also have a couple personal items that they don't want to share. potential strategy: Rent a private desk to these individuals for an additional fee. Again, are there any strategies you can share? One final request: Is there something better than "coworking facility"? Does anyone have a better term for the specific physical space in which coworking takes place?
