Hi, I'm Susan and I'm working on putting together a co-working space
for digital designers in NYC. Im a 2006 Animation graduate of The
School of Visual Arts and since graduating have always missed those
crazy productive days of working alongside my peers round the clock on
projects in the digital composition labs at school.
I bandied about the idea of a co-working space (before I knew what
it was called) with peers until a friend introduced me to Lila of New
York City's "Paragraph" -the writing co-working space. Once I spoke
with her and saw that such a space could work in reality I knew I
needed to put one together for my field; computer graphics.
I researched, wrote a business plan and got involved with the SBA.
All of these things were new to me but manageable -the hard part was
finding the financial backing. I learned a lot about investors,
bootstrap funding and networking and secured funding at the end of
April. Since then I've tackled New York City Commercial Real Estate.
This too was a new experience but I'm cautiously enthusiastic I've
found a spot to move forward.
The rest of getting the space going will mainly be adapting the
space, purchasing the equipment and software and setting it up.
Having worked in Animation and Live Action production I'm no stranger
to calling around, talking to and organizing people to get things
done. Having never run my own business I'm more nervous about setting
membership prices to encourage a thriving co-working culture but at
the same time keep the doors open with NYC rent and the huge prices of
graphic software.
I'm so glad to have found this Google group. Any tips and
suggestions would be most welcome.
  Susan
