Hello all!

C4 Workspace also got some media (TV) coverage last week. We were
approached by the local ABC affiliate in June about doing a story on
us. In late June they came out, did some interviews, shot some B-roll
and actually spent a lot of time in the space. They found out about us
from our (in trade) ad and profile in the local Natural Awakenings
magazine. The piece aired on my birthday, July 14, and I found out
about it while on vacation via FB and TW posts from members. Very cool
and a great opportunity for exposure. We've had three new memberships
from it, a neighboring town Econ Dev director stop by, etc.

More interesting for the coworking community (in the US at least) is
why the station wanted to do the story (besides coworking being an
awesome concept.) Four times a year television stations across the US
conduct a "sweeps" month. They attempt to drive their audience ratings
up so they can (artificially) set their advertising rates. Often it's
whacky stories, sometimes not even from the local community. But they
would much rather have local stories that are easy to report on - one
location, one day - to edit into a 3 minute package. And they like to
make the story "exclusive" so that the promo that airs for the story
is totally different than any other station.

So, if you are in the US plan to pitch your local stations a story
about your space in the month previous to the sweeps month. Sweeps
months are November, February, May and July. This is pretty much a
once a year opportunity since stations won't want a coworking story
every sweeps period. I would pitch the lowest rated Big 3 network
first; ABC, CBS, NBC - then go after the WB, CW, Fox, etc.

Be ready with your three main talking points in mind and go back to
them as often as possible (I didn't :-( ). They will become the
sound bites. Invite as many members to the space as you can so they
can get some potential "15 seconds of fame".

Mea Culpa - I screwed up the historical timeline. I stated in the
story that "coworking" started in Paris (as a Jelly). Don't know how
that factoid got in my head. Apologies to Amit and Brad for not
crediting either of them for anything. (Hat Factory, Hat Factory, Hat
Factory, Hat Factory)

Cheers!
