At the end of the day, bookstore/coffeeshops/etc all allow people to remain in their retail location to sell product. And they have to move a lot of product to support the large (>10k) square footage and staff at each location. Putting coworking spaces in Barnes & Nobles locations is just giving (another) crutch to a fading consumer model. It's like putting a keyring on the end of a buggywhip and selling it as the ideal place for your car keys. Do you really need the whole thing when all you really need is the last piece you threw in to make it functional?
As for access to books (print or 'e' versions), I'm looking into offering Safari Books Online subscription or discount with LaunchPad! San Diego membership. It doesn't make the space more attractive or draw people in to the location. Quite the opposite, actually. But it does give people more value as a member of the LaunchPad! community.
