*Inspired by Alex Hillman* Hi everyone,
This is Catharine, a long while back I was starting a space.....then the space was started and..... then the space finished. (Finished as in over.) The strange thing is, it didn't work out for all the right reasons. And what was great about it, remains great about it. I can absolutely identify what went wrong and why. However, what was consistent and fabulous was that the first thing I did was join this community. And I joined so early I used my own (this) email - and only later wrote from the co-working business email - so when things ended I remained a part of this community! whew. Because of that I have never felt alone and always felt a 'part of'. The other funny thing is that I found a new co-working space that became one without trying. In fact *it doesn't know* its a co-working space. Art has always been my passion so I joined a new studio (with 28 other artists) and sure enough! what I noticed was that daily, everyone sits around a big communal table to work on art promotion, web sites, etc. We have a coffee maker, a photo copier and even a beer / water fridge with a can of money on top where you just take out a cold one and drop 4$ into the jar. [over six months with 28 people we've never had anyone "take" anything- weirdly amazing!] Their secret is community, and for us, shared passion in art. It is key. I co-work with them and its hugely affordable and overwhelmingly satisfying, and am still with all of you! :) I write this to say that Alex, yes! your book project is awesome and amazing. I really like how it started and got lost and came back...... I am inspired by you. Your mentorship and contribution since I joined has always been appreciated. There are few of you here who are "wise elders" and the rest of us, who are varying levels of new, thank you and respect you. Finally, in the nature of co-working, I'd like to share this last thing. Colleagues of mine started a shared book and it was an awesome success. They inverted the publishing industry business model - because that is their specialty subject - business models. Their "new" model also made the book possible by generating some small income. People paid to take part in the experience. The book was called "Business Model Generation". People paid something like 24$ to take part and that included a copy of the book and a co-authoring credit. In the end they raised enough funds to get the book self published on amazon and it became number 10! of all business books in about a two week period. Then they had publishers approaching them for deals and, in the end, decided to go with one of them. Their new book is happening now and is called Business Model You. http://businessmodelyou.com/ Alex, you inspired me to write this message this morning. This feels great as I have not sent a message the group in too long! I will say I had great support from other co-working spaces here in Toronto, (most especially Rachel at http://camaraderie.ca/ (heart)). Good luck with the project. I will check out your link and follow its progression. Have a great day ! best, Catharine. -- Catharine MacIntosh +1. 416. 413. 7962 skype: catharine_mac 2011/6/22 <[email protected]> > Today's Topic Summary > > Group: http://groups.google.com/group/coworking/topics > > - Lets Do It In Public - A New Coworking > Book<#130b66943ce5d9e3_group_thread_0>[5 Updates] > - Hello from the OC <#130b66943ce5d9e3_group_thread_1> [1 Update] > - Reading CoWorking Site <#130b66943ce5d9e3_group_thread_2> [1 Update] > - Verizon Cell Coverage <#130b66943ce5d9e3_group_thread_3> [3 Updates] > - Coworking Grants <#130b66943ce5d9e3_group_thread_4> [1 Update] > - Asia Trip!
