Eli: Our numbers on independents are lower than a lot of other folks. The reason is we excluded people working fewer than 15 hours per week. We did this because our research focus was on people who derive a significant amount of their income from working independently and/or those starting a new business or profession.
If you include part-timers who work, on average, less than 15 hours per week as independents the total becomes roughly 33-35 million for the U.S. This is more inline with other sources, who tend to include anyone who works at least 1 hour per week.
