I haven't actively pursued LinkedIn, BUT I've got a chapter in my audiobook
about how we used online communities both for finding members and making
ours actions visible in the local community (which leads to more members,
as well as being known as good citizens in our bigger ecosystem). LinkedIn
didn't have nearly the capabilities it has now back in '06, but I can def
say that the strategies translate.

The key strategies are:

a) listening 90%/ talking 10% (aka flipping the megaphone around)
b) showing signs of "life" as they happen in the community
b) using online tools to organize people offline, and then
c) following up offline experiences with online interactions

There's a preview of the chapter here that I think will give you some good
ideas!
