Thanks for the replies. I'll try $^X first and see if that fixes the tests.

Is there any way of testing this without going through the whole rigmarole of creating a new distribution?

BTW, http://testers.cpan.org/ just gives a blank page. Presumably that should redirect to http://cpantesters.perl.org/ ?
