Hello, After a faltering start submitting reports last year, I'm trying again. I have a few OpenBSD and OSX machines of varying vintage, including an original OSX 10.1.5/Perl 5.6.0 install (shudder!). This OS will get wiped failing any further use for it.
Last month's CPAN Tester's update page put out a request for tests of older perls ("especially 5.005, 5.6.1, 5.6.2 and a selection of 5.8.*") on less popular platforms so I thought I'd try setting up this 5.6.0 Darwin Mac. Now, in hindsight, the fact 5.6.0 was not listed might have been sufficient warning, but having tried updating Bundle::CPAN and watched various failed test reports go by I reached the following: CPAN.pm: Going to build G/GB/GBARR/IO-1.2301.tar.gz Perl v5.6.1 required--this is only v5.6.0, stopped at Makefile.PL line 3. Running make test Make had some problems, maybe interrupted? Won't test Running make install Make had some problems, maybe interrupted? Won't install Running make for R/RG/RGARCIA/perl-5.10.0.tar.gz Trying with "/usr/bin/ncftp -c" to get ftp://cpan.etla.org/pub/CPAN/authors/id/R/RG/RGARCIA/perl-5.10.0.tar.gz CPAN: MD5 security checks disabled because MD5 not installed. Please consider installing the MD5 module. perl-5.10.0 perl-5.10.0/AUTHORS perl-5.10.0/Artistic perl-5.10.0/Changes ... followed shortly afterwards by the attempted installation of the perl-5.10.0 package, which is currently stopped while it asks me for configuration details. Yikes! This doesn't look good, so I'm wondering if there's any point in trying to set up a test box with this odd combination. Will it help anyone? Having used 5.005 in my previous employment and returned recently with 5.8.x I kind of missed 5.6.x, so would it be safe to say that 5.6.0 is best avoided, particularly the Darwin variant? I don't want to waste my time, and more importantly the authors', tracking down issues that are actually caused by a seriously broken perl port. -- Neil Hughes
