Alright, I've stopped trying to be clever about the log.txt and it's now a bog-standard cron job without fancy lockfiles that get jammed up and need to be cleared. Would that I had decided not to be clever yesterday...
I'll continue keeping an eye on this, and by that I mean I will finally write a verdammt monitor for the first line of the log.txt timestamp...
