i suspect most of the other errors were triggered by the lack of qr// in
macperl.

oooh, macperl is way behind in perl versions. i use qr// which is in
5.005. i could do a workaround for macperl to eliminate that. i don't
have the immediate time to do it. maybe someone on this list who know
macperl could help out.
