For my personal experience:
1. I strongly suggest creating a seperated, non-root perl
installation only for testing, and testing it as a non-root account, in
order to avoid beta-release packages to compromise your own system.
For the same reason above I could only suggest testing
MSWin32/cygwin IF AND ONLY IF your system is disposable and system
compromising is not a great deal.
2. The average number of modules getting into CPAN per day is about
30-60. This would be a tough work if you are using old PC.
3. Some packages may use up your memory/CPU and interfere other
processes in your system. A CPU with more than one thread (hyper-thread
or dual/qua core) would be nice.
4. It takes averagely 10 or more hours for a module, from the time
you receive the upload notice, till it be available on the CPAN archive.
You may test gather and test the modules uploaded one day before.
5. Use http://www.cpan.org/ as your only CPAN source, since it is
the most up-to-date archive. The up-to-date status of ftp://ftp.cpan.org/
depends on many countries. Some modules depends on other newly-uploaded
modules, and cannot be testing if the required modules are not available
on the archive yet.
It's nice that people keep joining this testers project. Testing
does help a lot of modules getting better. I receive lots of thanks
from authors all over the world. It's a worthy job.
