My previous nmake process issues turn out to have been caused by
an old version of nmake. It's really weird cause I
compiled perl 5.8 RC3 without any problems.
The problematic version of nmake is
Microsoft (R) Program Maintenance Utility Version 1.50
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corp 1988-94. All rights reserved.
The newer version of nmake that I used and successfully
made mod_perl-1.99_04 with is
Microsoft (R) Program Maintenance Utility Version 6.00.8168.0
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1988-1998. All rights reserved.
I hope this makes it into some mod_perl README/FAQ
so that others don't run into this kind of trouble
