A flashing red !!! is the portlet crash shield preventing all the portal from being in error. You can deactivate it in the ZMI (portal_cpsportlets I think) to get a proper traceback.

The user interface for the forum thread form seemed rather spartan and I wasn't sure what the second field under the body field was for. I tried leaving it blank and entering something. It made no difference. Am I missing something?
