based workflow. Which represents the "study-live" of a student at a
university.

That sounds to me that I have to create a dedicated workflow for each
document, since each document, which can be created in the students
folder, has it's portal_type.
Just change the mapping so that these different document types follow
the same workflow.
They follow a similar workflow, mainly the preconditions differ under
which they can be created. For example the second-study-year folder can
not be created before the first study year is successfully created.
