Of course, I have found good documents about upgrading Zope in a safe
manner (= maintaining the possibility to revert changes).

It depends on the meaning of "fails". If it doesn't start for some
reasons it fails of course and I still have the door open for the
previous installation.
However there is at least another possibility: Zope boots fine but CPS
relies on some API that in early Zope versions have been modified. In
substance only during some operations the problem/s will appear.

Probably it was more appropriate to ask if CMF 1.4.2 (the version on
which CPS 3.0 is built over) works well with Zope 2.7.6.

Any further help? Thanks!

Zope APIs are supposed to be "stable" for a given minor release number (2.6.x or 2.7.x).

Of course, strange things could happen but this is not expected.

It is unsafe, however, to install a CMF/CPS version that has been developped for, say, Zope 2.6, on top of, say, Zope 2.7.
