CPS basically do use PortalTransforms.
We also created a nice plugin to transform OOo XML to DocBook and
DocBook to HTML (or PDF).
You can see an example here :

openoffice document uploaded in CPS. CPS then takes care of the DocBook
transformation and then DocBook to HTML.
