To have uses redirected to their department workspace, I think the best way would be to modify the logged_in script. It does a redirect in the end, and that could be customized.
I guess you with "management interface" mean that there is a lot of actions there. First of all these actions would only be visible to people who have the right to see them, so most users would not see most of the actions. You can also modify the actions in the portal_actions tool.
To show recent updates and such you can modify the different portlets shown on the front page to display the things you want.
perfect if it can provide thumnail images to show the documents and graphics. Is it possible to do this?
Anything is possible, but I don't know if this is very easy. ;) Somebody else might know what is needed here.
