I installed the "CPSDefault Site".
How do I change the contents of the front page

I went into "Portal Themes" and managed to change the logo (top
left hand side). But I don't know how to change the contents of
the page.
if you want to keep the portlets translatable, that's in the
Localizer in the ZMi
What is so special about the front page that one has to resort to
doing this? If I create content elsewhere, say in my private space, I
can click on the Translate link in the object actions menu and
translate away. That would create a new revision of the document for
that language. Actually, I can no longer find that option in 3.4.
What happened to it? Does one have to resort to the clunky ZMI
interface to translate all content?
The front page as far as I know is not associated to any CPS document,
so there is no notion of language revision.
It is possible however to create a "front page" document somewhere in
the site in several languages and place a "Document Portlet" on the
front page that points at it. Having this as a default site setup would
be a bit overkill though, and using localizer is still the easiest
option although I wouldn't use it myself.
To create front pages in different languages we use several sections
(EN, SV) and one of them is the default front page, but this requires
some extra setup in apache.
