Either he was writing for a European audience and chose to use 
the spelling his audience would find least jarring, or (most 
likely) because the copy editor was british. Europeans do not 
have the same attitude about people being permitted to make 
spelling errors that prevails in the US. 

A british newspaper would regard putting his comments through in 
american standard spellings as a violation of its style guidelines.
