Check on http://www.freshmeat.net/ for a program called "Wipe".  (Actually
there are a couple by that name.  Look at the source and docs for actual
function.) Should do what you want.

I use similar programs when I sell off an old disk drive.  Keeps things
like password files and the like out of the hands of the nosey.
