# Former Figure Skater Fights to Keep Her File Secret
#
# BERLIN - Former East German figure-skating star Katarina Witt
# has applied to a Berlin court to prevent the release of the file
# the communist state's secret police - the Stasi - held on her,
# the authority that holds the records confirmed Saturday.
#
# The two-time Olympic gold medalist's move to stop the release
# of her Stasi file to journalists follows a similar attempt by
# former Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
#
# The newsmagazine Der Spiegel reported that Witt's lawyer, Heinz
# Duex, applied to the Berlin administrative court Friday for a
# temporary order to prevent the release of her file.
#
# Witt has acknowledged she had contact with the secret police
# but denies she ever worked for the Stasi.
#
# The East German government relentlessly spied on its citizens,
# and the Stasi kept a network of 85,000 full-time spies and 170,000
# voluntary informers. Its files have buried or tarnished the
# professional and political careers and blighted the lives of
# many East Germans.
#
# "The files are as intimate as a diary, and I don't want people
# reading into my life," Der Spiegel quoted Witt as saying.

I wonder how Declan feels about this.
