CHENNAI: The first community radio Anna FM was launched with lot of fanfare
by the Media Science Department of the Anna University some years ago,
providing the students with some valuable experience. But today, the
students have minimal or no access to it.

This is perhaps an example of how a department with good infrastructure puts
paid to the expectations of the students merely due to internal politicking.

The seniors of the five-year course on integrated electronic media recall
how they were involved in the programming and broadcasting of programmes in
Anna FM, a pioneering effort in campus community radio programming.

The students learnt reporting, as they went out of the campus and collected
real time information, condensed them into interesting capsules and
broadcast the information over the radio. This initiative, the teachers say,
had secured placements for three students in BBC Radio.

But now the junior students have almost no part to play in Anna FM as it has
been attached to the Educational Multimedia Research Center (EMRC), carved
out of the Media Science Department.

The lack of coordination between these two departments has resulted in the
students not having access to the radio.

The students allege that the content is repeated.

Due to the absence of cooperation, the Media Science Department took it upon
itself to decide to broadcast Gyan Vani programmes from the department.
Teachers allege that in spite of having nearly an hour allotted for
students' content to be published, the quality of programmes has taken a
beating.

Worse still, the audio room is now out of bounds for the students as Gyan
Vani has complete control over it.

Attempts to contact the HoD of the Media Science Department met with no
success.
