First community radio in Noida

NOIDA, October 4 Community awareness on issues like health, law and order,
development and social issues will soon have a voice in Noida. The city is
set to unveil its own first community radio. The licence for starting
community radio has been granted to the Institute of Management Studies by
the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The community radio will
be named Salaam Namaste CRS 90.4 FM and journalism students of the
management institute will host programmes.
"On September 16, 2008 we have received the grant of permission from
Information and Broadcasting ministry which is a license to make the radio
functional," said Sanjay Kumar, head of admission and public relations
department at IMS.
While welcoming the inauguration of the first-ever community radio station
in the city, District Magistrate, Gautam Budh Nagar, Shravan Kumar, said the
services of Salaam Namaste could be used for creating public awareness
regarding ongoing issues. "Community radio will be beneficial for the city
as issues pertaining to the grassroots level would be discussed by the
people," said the DM.
It will run programmes related to various issues like health, crime,
education, law and order and industries for eight hours every day. "Students
will host the programmes. Community radio will provide a platform for the
people to come and share their views," said Kumar.
Students of the Institute of Management Studies have decided to discuss the
city and its problems with the people who are affected. Community radio will
also run health programmes and invite doctors and consultants for the
benefit of people.
Community radio will be inaugurated on October 12 and also serve as a guide
for cultural activities in the city. Kumar said, "We will have a section
where all major events and festivities will be reported. Noida has seen
industrial unrest, the radio will also provide a platform for those who were
unheard and for the industrialists who face major problems in the region."
The institute is performing a trial run till October 12.
"The radio will cover area of 10 km which will cover Mayur Vihar phase III,
Noida and DND flyover," added Kumar.
