Just a spot of interesting deconstruction of the Press Release itself (not that this will get any traction in the kind of media that reaches ordinary people today):
"This has become possible after the Ministry's permission to Society for Development Alternatives to establish, maintain and operate a community radio. Thirty-four NGOs have so far got MIB's permission to set up and operate community radio stations across India." Logically, therefore, the Ministry was acting as a roadblock to NGOs to set up 'community' radio stations. In true 1984speak, removing roadblocks created by the government itself is now considered positive action. "The Policy was liberalised with a view to allowing greater participation by the civil society on issues of development and social change." Which means, again I would hope entirely logically, that all previous policy was designed to to inhibit greater participation by civil society on issues of development and social change. Well, duh, we knew that, but it's nice to have it confirmed in an official communique. Especially one that takes an initiative of civil society and claims full government credit for making it happen. Interestingly, several of the sites named below are actually news aggregators, and do not actually edit content, ie they do not pretend to present 'the news' (a journalistic activity), merely carry other people's content ad verbatim. Non-government owned radio stations are not even allowed to do this.
