A couple of problems with this story: (1) I hope CM Tarun Gogoi, like other chief ministers before him, isn't contemplating setting up state-run 'community radio' stations in Assam. His announcement of ten imminent CR stations in the state sounds a little too pat. (2) A temporary three day 'Demo License' does not a community radio make.

Gogoi also announced that initially ten community radio stations would come up in the State. Speaking at the two-day 'Sixth Regional Consultation on Community Radio Awareness' organized by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) in association with the Community Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) and Krishnakanta Handique State Open University at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Gogoi said that community radio stations could play a significant role in creating mass awareness, especially in rural and interior areas. "Disseminating information on diverse subjects including agriculture, health and sanitation, etc., through community radio stations can be critical to generating public awareness," Gogoi said, adding that the State Government was committed to extending the community radio network in Assam. Dr R Sreedher, Director, CEMCA, appreciated the efforts of the State Government in setting up the first community radio station at the KK Handique University on Tuesday following the issuance of a temporary licence on Friday. PK Bisoi, Director, Broadcast Development, Union Ministry of I&B, gave a background briefing on community radio. He said that it was since 2006 that community organizations were being given licences for starting the radio stations in a bid to extend it.
