Tsunami-affected TN village to get community radio station

New Delhi (PTI): The government on Thursday permitted a Madurai-based NGO
to establish, maintain and operate a Community Radio Station in Tamil Nadu
for empowering women, farmers and fishermen with critical information and
communication for disaster preparedness and management.

The Kalanjiam Community Radio Station, which is expected to be operational
within three months as per an agreement, will be set up by Madurai-based
DHAN Foundation in Vizhunthamavadi village of Keelayiur block in
Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, an Information and Broadcasting
Ministry release said.

Nagapattinam district is a tsunami affected area. The Community Radio
Station is expected to serve particularly the women, farmers, and the
fishermen communities with information and communication relay
transmission that is critical for disaster preparedness and management.

The community management committee has made linkages with local government
institutions like panchayats, health centers, schools and disaster
management-related government institutions to establish a disaster
management mechanism to face natural calamities.

The Ministry said it expects that its initiative will help local people to
be better informed about developmental measures of the government and
promote transparency in the implementation of its schemes.
