All India Radio has been the repository of an equally invaluable, perhaps even more so, given the paths of destruction of cultural roots here, audio repository of South Asian music and audio theater, paid for out of public funds. Unfortunately, without much public debate, this resource has been packaged and is being sold nowadays. This matter needs urgent discussion and public involvement, for as the nascent movement to creating community radio in the region grows, so will the new archives of music and culture, that gain access to art and culture forms hitherto ignored by the mainstream. The British Library holds one of the world’s foremost sound archives with a collection of over 3.5 million audio recordings. These come from all over the world and cover the entire range of recorded sound from music, drama and literature, to oral history, wildlife and environmental sounds. You can search and browse information about all the sounds held in the British Library at our online catalogue. This website delivers a selection of that rich audio heritage in the form of tens of thousands of digitised recordings and their associated documentation.
