There are precautions, but not foolproof. Firstly, on the mast, and definitely above the antenna, there should be a grounding path (preferably made of fairly thick OFHC copper) that leads directly deep into the ground below the mast, and preferably into moist soil (deep= more than one meter). Secondly, the entire 'live' circuit must be fitted with a vacuum tube lightning arrestor (one-time use only, as the arrestor tube is designed to fail in order to protect the live circuit. This can be quite expensive, if one is located in an area where lightning strikes are common. If I am not mistaken, the tube alone costs about Rs 10,000).
