How interesting..........
I remember growing up after the big one- World War 2- and what it meant to be
*made in Japan*. It was a joke. No one wanted it. We used to tease each other
as children saying, "It must have been made in Japan" when our toys would
break quickly after a few plays.
Japan, after all the reparations they received after the bombings, rose to
take on the BIG THREE AUTO MAKERS IN THE US. In the 1980s Japan bashing was
so acceptable, you couldn't drive a Japanese car on a UAW lot anywhere in
Detroit without getting your car messed up.
Now Japan competes with the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina on the
question of Information Technology. It is a serious problem for Japan and
unionized workers everywhere.
You see, we have virtually no unions in North Carolina. Union density has
dropped from 6% less than 10 years ago to 3.5% today.
I will be writing more about this phenomenon as we build the *Organize the
South* Solidarity Campaign 2000-2002.
