RFE/RL Newsline, 10/6/00 ONLY 30 PERCENT OF RUSSIAN BIRTHS ARE 'NORMAL.' The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences told AP on 5 October that the number of normal births in the Russian Federation declined from 45.3 percent in 1992 to just 30 percent in 1999. An academy statistician blamed this decline on the spread of alcoholism, drug use, sexually transmitted diseases, and an overall decline in the health of citizens. She added that the lack of medical equipment, inadequate prenatal care, and parental medical problems now mean that 53 percent of newborns leave maternity clinics suffering from a chronic ailment or disease.
