It is easy to conceive of a managed, peaceful and harmonious
transition from a high-impact, high-population 'full world'
of 8
billion
or more people, to a genuinely sustainable, low-impact world
with a human population of 2 billion or less.

Mark, this is a very reassuring thought. I wish I could find
the right starting point for a POLITICAL discussion on this.
On the one hand it's got to take us outside of the framework
of the bourgeois state, within the confines of which I
believe nothing is possible. But more relevant to the above
point is I think the polics of technology and gender,
without which a discussion of population seems rather
ineffectual to me. To take this forward requires entering
some difficult cutural territory. (How often does 'culture'
appear on this list?) Just as I don't believe that adequate
political change can occur within the framework of the
nation state, I don't believe that the population issue,
which is political in a very delicate sense, can be
addressed within the confines of traditional religious
beliefs, romantic mythology or the ideology of the family.
It has to be a pretty straightforward discussion of gender,
sexuality, reproduction and technology right outside of
those notorious blind spots. You see this is why I believe
that the ultra left have been right all along. It's god, the
family and the state, you see - where can we really go
(politically, I continue to say) without confronting the
really crippling baggage of all this tradition?
