I replied to all, because I want your friends to know how much you are respected by this Englishman. This letter of yours spells out lots of things I suspected and hoped were true about you. I don't believe that people like you or me can save the world but it makes me feel better to know there are people like you in it. I am an English public school, London School of Economics Masters Degree person, meaning I am inbuilt with an ineffable, ineffaceable and easy sense of absolute social superiority. I am not proud of this but I cannot hope to overcome it. It's just the way I am. My father's line runs back to Llywellyn Fawr, the greatest Welsh prince. My mother's ancestors came here with William the Conqueror after 1066. That's my genealogy. I respect many like for instance Charles Brown and Jim Craven whose lineages are still better endowed with fight than mine. There are many others. As a child I was taught to agree with Cecil Rhodes (conqueror of half Africa) that to be born an Englishman, is to be born a winner in the great lottery of life. Even when I learnt to reject colonialism, racism and anglo-saxon imperialism, I never lost that inner feeling of certainty, I never lost the patronising manner and clipped accent which foreigners find irresistible. Now, late in life, I even find that I admire this heritage, because so little else has stood the test of time. Now the United States is ruled by a petty thief, a kind of political Ali Babar, a desperate last fling of US monopoly business. Interesting times, huh? England is your oldest ally. But England is not America. England is the homeland of good manners. However much we love you, we love freedom more. Without England, homeland of freedom, you cannot survive. Without the English people, America will fall. It will fall. God Bless all of you, especially those of Welsh ancestry. What a great nation is the Welsh! Who else lived cheek by jowl with the anglo-normans for six hundred years, and kept their faith and their poetry, their music and their language, and were not enslaved? God bless Wales!
