A lot of the commentary about the 'universal franchise' and disenfranchisement misses the mark somewhat. Charles projects a situation where the election was only one step in an already fully progressed, auto-disenfranchisement underway. Most Americans do not participate in elections because 'the process' has been seen by many, as fraudulent for some long time. Or more so..... irrelevant. Mark sees the importance of the elections with London eyes and mind. But the 'Hillbillies' are from Dallas, Texas way.... And the world thought that H. Ross Perot had become a non- player! The recent American vote may very well represent a crucial turning point in how Europeans and other world citizens see US 'democracy'. But not so from 'Hillbilly Land'. Not much has changed. Disenfranchised? Hell, we're not in jail. What's that word mean anyway? LBJ, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush.... Cheney.... Gingrich.... Graham.... Lott... Falwell.... An entire region of the US has been disenfranchised for some 2 or 3 decades now. Long Live Michael Dukakis and Walter Mondale! Northern Losers. Not exactly Abraham Lincoln they were.. Charles Brown posted an article with this commentary...... <As promised GW Bush has recruited competent and experienced advisors. Despite their seeming diversity however they have a common denominator. The America they reflect is the oil, pharmaceutical, armament, Wall Street and eugenics interests long associated with the Bush family.> Yes, well isn't that what the Beverly Hillbillies did when they struck it rich? Money talks without question in the boondocks (North Central Texas), so when The Hillbillies come to Washington, they think it will do the same. But this analysis misses the key component of the rising of Bush. He represents the pro- capitalism values that reign supreme in sluburbia underneath the sun. Go take your 'franchise' to The Mall! The battle ahead is to see if The South can ram its values down the throats of The North. The Texas based Right got tired of tact and doesn't even see the necessity of it. Ain't necessary down back home, no ways. After 8 years of Clinton, the liberals can't even hold on to West Virginia and Ohio. Or the 'universal franchise'. Clinton will go down as US liberalism's Neville Chamberlain. It may be time for Stalin to make a comeback! Stalin vs. The Texas Hillbillies in a new, 21st Century Battle of Stalingrad. It'll be interesting to watch Tony Blair in uniform. What a dilemma! Blair can play Churchill. Are you pointy headed liberals in New York City, Boston, Berkeley, and London tough enough to take on the Kings of Suburbia?
