That is, why should we be debating history?
Well, there would be reams of Marxist material answering to Rob's indignation.
But I will stick to my old teacher of History Pérez Amuchástegui, who in a very
Crocean spirit but with words full of verve explained to an astonished crowd of
hard nosed "Leninist" students that "History is that in our past that bites our
present".
When we debate on Stalin or similar issues we are debating _how to face_ the
issues Rob has -reasonably- proposed as the most urgent for us today. History
is not the "knowledge of things past" but the conscious evaluation of past,
present and future human actions.
Since many among the contributors to this list call ourselves Marxists (and
some even go the length of proposing themselves as Leninists), this historic
debate is of the greatest interest and importance. And, if I am not wrong,
there are some members of the list who live in the countries of Eastern Europe,
where the issues put at stake by this "useless" debate are of the greatest
importance. Even the ecological dramas in Russia, for example, cannot be
understood without an evaluation of what was Stalin and his group proposing as
a model for development.
Hope I convinced Rob (which I don't think I did, but well...)
