I've found a workaround, if anyone is interested.
I use the first method (cloning to the usb disk, and then to the work
machine), then I remove .gitmodules and commit the change. I can then git
pull, and I keep the "disable submodules" commit locally. I don't mind,
since I don't push from this machine (I bring patches home).
