Use Ctrl+L rather than Ctrl+O, it will leave you in command mode until
you press Esc or drop in to insert mode some other way.

I prefer to cc: both the list and the individual so that others can
read along. It also helps when someone else spots a problem the
initial conversation missed. However, I think SF.net's lists had some
problems today and rejected my reply to the list.
