How many editors will the wiki have? If it's not that many (less than 50?) how about adding a note to the "Log in / create account" page inviting people to mail the admin to get logins? We've done this on our wiki and have been spam-free for a couple of years now. It's annoying for the admin for a couple of days as existing users mail and ask, but after that it's very little work.
