Many developers would rather sacrifice their grandmother than switching the toolkit. So for the foreseeable any discussion about switching toolkits is pretty much useless. Any decision for a toolkit would inevitably lead to a split. Same for the UI. Do you expect that all projects could agree to a common UI? After all Linux is about choice, so this isn't necessary a bad thing.
